HISTORIC SPACE JUMP: BREAKING THE SOUND BARRIER

LITTLE PLUTO CHECKS IN WITH THE REDBULL TEAM TO LEARN ABOUT THIS HISTORIC SPACE JUMP TONIGHT (9th October 2012 Australian Time)

Astro Joey & The Cosmic Rays dedicate our tune “Blast off” to Felix and the Redbull Team……Safe Passage

Felix Baumgartner’s supersonic freefall from 120,000 ft will be the ultimate scientific experiment in a near-space environment.

Is it really possible for a human being to break the speed of sound in freefall?

If calculations prove to be accurate, and Felix is successful in his attempts to control his position, he will accelerate from standstill to the speed of sound – that’s 0 to approximately 690 miles per hour in 40 seconds or less.

What does it mean to “break the speed of sound”?

Breaking the speed of sound refers to catching up with – and surpassing – the speed at which sound waves are produced in the air. The speed of sound is affected by temperature: where the air is colder, sound travels more slowly. At about 100,000 feet above sea level, Felix Baumgartner will need to accelerate to about 690 miles per hour to match the speed of sound, known as Mach 1. Then if he continues to accelerate and surpasses the speed of sound, he’ll be “supersonic.”

Is there really a sound “barrier”?

No, it’s a figure of speech. The concept stems from the mid-20th century, when early high-speed aircraft sometimes experienced extreme instability, and even broke up, as they neared the speed of sound. Today we know that such instability is caused by shock waves that build up in the “transonic” zone – the range of speeds approaching the speed of sound. Sometimes shock waves even collide with each other, a phenomenon known as the “shock-shock interaction,” creating results that can be similar to an explosion. Fortunately, the impact of shock waves becomes less severe with higher altitude, because air becomes less dense. And once an object passes through that imaginary “sound barrier” to catch up with and surpass the speed of sound, flight is smooth.

What other hazards will Felix Baumgartner face as he attempts to break the speed of sound?

The list includes temperatures well below freezing, too little oxygen to breathe, the tendency to spin uncontrollably and air pressure so low that without protection blood is said to “boil” with vapor bubbles.

What will protect Felix Baumgartner from these hazards?

Strategies include intensive training to prepare him for possible instability: the team has developed a graduated, multi-stage test program in which he jumps from successively higher outdoor altitudes, as well as a choreographed step-off from the capsule so that he achieves a streamlined position. Equipment is also important: an innovative full-pressure suit and helmet provide oxygen, protection and pressurization, and a special drogue parachute  is available for stabilization if necessary.

Why won’t Felix reach terminal velocity before he breaks the speed of sound?

Terminal velocity, a concept familiar to skydivers, refers to the point at which a falling object stops accelerating. Drag, or resistance, is one of the key factors causing terminal velocity. Bailing out at a very high altitude, where the air is thin, should enable Felix to break the speed of sound before reaching more dense air that will create drag and eventually result in his terminal velocity. Still, he’ll want to streamline his body as quickly as possible to aid his acceleration.

How will we know that Felix has broken the speed of sound?
Equipment in Felix’s chest pack will capture and record the necessary data for review by the mission team as well as by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale world governing body.

What can be learned by breaking the speed of sound in freefall?

The data gathered about the effects of supersonic freefall can provide valuable tools for researchers looking to develop safety procedures for the pilots and astronauts of today and tomorrow – and for future space tourists. Proof that a human can break the speed of sound in freefall could provide support for the development of sub-orbital bailout procedures that currently don’t exist. In noting that the Red Bull Stratos team will be capturing as much physiological and environmental data as possible, medical director Jon Clark says: “We try to anticipate as much as we can about supersonic speed, but we really don’t know, because nobody has done this before.”

THE SOUND OF PLUTO

Little Pluto-Science Reporter

by Little Pluto, Science Reporter, Tuesday 29th May 2012.

It’s been a tough time for us Plutonians since we were demoted to dwarf status. However we are a resilient bunch, although at times we have felt very left out, we still exist and operate as we always have. We are just having to deal with the human’s new awakenings. A lot of the problems arose inside our wider community of the Kuiper-belt where objects bigger than Pluto underscored our shaky status.

We were overthrown by the almighty “Xena”. ( In fact Xena is now known as Enis, after the Greek goddess of discord and strife.) You see Pluto is suffering as a result of the technology revolution. In the old days earthly scientists were unable to see clearly to the outer planets and what was there. Now with their new fan dangle toys they cited “Xena” who is just a little bit bigger than us Plutons. She has more attitude and to be seen by the humans through Hubble, she pranced around in front of the new technical telescopes of the human scientists.

Xena, also known as Enis, Teasing her way to fame

As much as we love the Hubble space telescope its ability to hone in closer on our outer region is interfering with life as we knew it. Outsiders…They just come in and think they have the answers to problems. By the way, a lot of our problems did not exist until earthlings butted in. So now to earthlings we Plutonians are merely known as an asteroid  number dubbed 134340. Mmmmm oh to be a mere number…

We have always existed harmoniously with Xena, we knew she was there. We played together well, until she started showing off through her new human fame. Humans mean well, but they have big egos that can interfere with life as we know it at times.

PLUTO has always had 4 moons

In June 2011 the Hubble set its telescopic eyes on P4, now classified as another moon for us, saying that we now have 4 moons. That’s cool but we have always known we have 4 moons, just because these earthly scientist can now see it, they believe it. There is an old earthly saying, if you did not see the tree fall in the forest did it really happen?

This column is not meant to be a whinge session about new human judgments on our world, the world we Plutonians always knew existed. (I do like earthlings they are funny little creatures:) ) What I really wanted to share with you all, is the cool sounds of Pluto. We have been jamming up here for millenniums creating great sounds waves. We have been rocking out and making molecules vibrate for gillion of years. Although for humans, they could never really hear the wonderment of our sound. Because you see sound needs a medium to travel through to be heard by the human ear.

Sounds of space silence

On Earth, sound travels to your ears by vibrating air molecules. In deep space, the large empty areas between stars and planets, there are no molecules to vibrate. There is no sound there. It’s that cool tranquil quarts rock jazz groove of the sound of silence, but its not really silent to all ears.

So, in order for sound to travel, there has to be something with molecules for it to travel through. That’s how Astro Joey and the Cosmic Rays came to discover the Planet Pluto vibe. It was carried through Astro Joeys Blue jet and so her band could hear the Pluto sound.

Take a listen in the video and hear for yourself.    SOUND OF PLUTO

It’s been very cool because Astro Joey and The Cosmic Rays have really encourage me not to let the new human discoveries get me down. So Astro Joey said when you get built up emotions, instead of getting angry just express them in music. So Astro Joey and the Band, invited me to come play with them. It has been awesome and I learnt a lot. So much so, that some of the Electronica Bands around the cosmos have me helping them in the studio. I lay down the sound of Pluto and then the other musicians put down some cool melody’s and grooves. It’s a great thing to try. Give it a go.

So…..Rock on Pluto.
